Sutter Creek Theatre
In 1912, construction began on the brick and concrete silent film theatre. The building was designed to reflect the arches and stonework found in many 18th century Italian buildings. Completed in 1919, the theatre then seated 250. Later, seats were removed to make room for a stage, and the theatre now seats 215. There were four theatres built in Amador County during this period. Today, only the Sutter Creek Theatre remains. The Ione Theatre was torn down to make room for a parking lot in 70's; the Jackson Theatre was destroyed by a fire in 1998; and the Plymouth Theatre was destroyed years ago as well.
The Sutter Creek Theatre is a complete multipurpose entertainment center that hosts events year round, including award winning music, live theatre, dance, film, and other events. Performers and audiences alike enjoy the excellent acoustics and intimate seating. The theatre has modern sound, lighting, and climate controls, but retains the Art Deco painted ceiling and original seats.
The two store fronts that are part of the theatre building are now occupied by Damiani's Enoteca, the Italian wine bar open during shows that features the finest local wines; and Caffe Intermezzo, featuring the county's best coffee and espresso, made on an Italian espresso machine from organic coffee from one of the West Coast's premium roasters. Also featured are Gelato, Panini, salads, and a special selection of the best Chinese food. The Wor Won Ton Soup is legendary!
No matter who the artist or what the event, it's always worth seeing it at the Sutter Creek Theatre. This is the fifth season of providing fine entertainment. An annual children's drama camp is hosted, and annually, "A Christmas Carol" is produced. The Theatre has previously been voted Sutter Creek's Best Downtown Business, and voted the KCRA 3 "A" list "Best Independent Theatre" for 2008. Past artists include Janis Ian, Maria Muldaur, Karla Bonoff, John McEuen, John Jorgenson, Harry Manx, Pierre Bensusan, Tony Furtado, Laurie Lewis, and many other fine talents.
The Sutter Creek Theatre is located in Sutter Creek, on Highway 49, east and south of Sacramento in the beautiful gold country (and out of the fog!).The drive is about one hour or less from Sacramento or Stockton, two hours from most of the Bay Area.
